REVIEW: Third album release by California band The Popravinas! - Willy Nilly (2019 Zesty Smile Records)

The Popravinas present with ''Willy Nilly'' their meanwhile third longplayer. Also on ''Nilly Willy'' they stay true to their style. The band plays a mixture of Rock, Power Pop, Alt Country , Pop Rock. All these influences are reflected in their music. And this happens on a high-class level.
The band's identifying feature clearly lies in the very memorable voice and vocal style of Eddy Sill, who is also responsible for the songwriting, as well as the way the arrangements are arranged. And here comes multi-instrumentalist John Adair in the game, who arranged the songs together with Sill. He also produced, mixed, mastered and engineered the album. Not to forget his extraordinary guitar work, which has left its mark on the album. He is supported by rhythm guitarist Dean Lyons. The rhythm section is completed by David Rodgers.

To get to the album that just came out: First of all I noticed that the album with nine songs was relatively short. But sometimes less is more and this confirms the band very convincingly here. The album starts with 'Talkin' Out Loud' a good time pop rocker who sometimes reminds a bit of the Stones. Tim's Basement' can't really convince me even after listening to it several times. But the ballad 'Did Ya' more than makes up for that. With economical instrumentation the band creates a very convincing mood. 'Put It all Together' is a great country pop song that immediately catches the ear. With 'Dun' Me In' the tempo is increased and I really like the vocal arrangements.

'Sofia' is definitely the single of the album for me. For me one of the strongest songs on the album is definitely 'Almost Sick'. The song is powerful. You can't make the arrangement any better. Absolutely convincing. 'Hard Way' is also one of the strongest songs on the album and I like it very much. The final point of the album is the ballad 'Up The Coast To San Francisco' and is another highlight. The song creates a real mood and that should convey music if possible.

Conclusion: The band presents a good album here. For me the strongest songs are ''Almost Sick'', ''Hard Way (To Make An Easy Living)'', ''Up The Coast To San Francisco''. The album offers everything you expect from the Popravinas. Good pop music. But here's a little criticism: I would have liked a little more experimentation from the band. That's why only four out of five stars. (Frank)
