DOT DASH - PROTO RETRO (2018 The Beautiful Music) A little preview of the new Dot Dash album ''Proto Retro''.
The Washington DC band ''Dot Dash'' just released their sixth longplayer, called ''Proto Retro''.
The band, meanwhile shrunk to a trio, doesn't reinvent the band sound, of course, but it's supposed to go in a more pop direction. Whereby the band could already convince on their older albums with wonderful Jangle pop songs. So for me the band still sounds absolutely like Dot Dash, without them chumming into the pop market on the new album.
The roots of the band probably lie in the sixties and eighties. Reminiscences of Jangle Pop and also power pop of the eighties can be heard again and again in the songs. In addition there is the punkrock energy of the band. This results in rocky songs with often great pop melodies. Also on the new album they remain true to their ''philosophy''. The opener ''Unfair Weather'' convinces with sixties flair and is a powerful, yet contemporary guitar pop rocker. Grey Blue Green'' convinces with harmonic guitars and wonderful melodies. I don't want to work through the album song by song here. It's really hard to find a weak song, because the band can convince again and again in the songs with surprising little twists. This of course keeps the tension, but doesn't work in every song. TV/Radio'' for example is a rather average rock song, albeit with good guitar work. Generally the guitar work is the great strength of the album. Maybe the band didn't present the strongest of their six albums so far, but if you like guitar pop with strong melodies, you'll love the album and Dot Dash.
I recommend to give it a try. You can stream the album here
