The Hollies - Buddy Holly 1980 (2007 EMI)

The Hollies are a GREAT group. Their harmony is terriffic !! They do a terriffic job "covering" the Buddy Holly songs. They do them almost exactly like Buddy Holly. That's what I want to hear when I hear a song by somebody "covering" a song, by somebody else !!
And they do it well !! (Popeye, amazon customer)

I had this album when it first came out and have been waiting for it to come out reasonably priced on CD. Classic Hollies harmonies for all of you Posies fans and great interpretations of the Holly catalog.(Martin Franzen, amazon customer)

This album shows how great the Hollies' harmonies work with some of Buddy Holly's best tunes. Another great album by the Hollies!(Ann, amazon customer)

This was The Hollies' last proper album (aside from the maligned '83 reunion with Nash that had just 3 good tracks, and the recent "Staying Power", which had only one standout track, "Suspended Animation"), and also their second album to contain songs exclusively by one writer. Like the Dylan album, this would have been better if the best four tracks had been released as an E.P. instead of a full-fledged LP. The good ones are "I'm Gonna Love You Too", "Wishing", and the rockers "Midnight Shift", and Think It Over", which feature some good vocalizing by Allan Clarke. The remaining tracks are a bit too bland and unexciting. Not an LP to play repeatedly, but the four tracks mentioned are well-done covers and work well. The wishy-washy production tends to get in the way of the other tracks, as well as them being a bit too overly-familiar. (Frederic Cooper)

These opinions are all by people who purchased the album on amazon. I could not found a review for the album, so please excuse me because i did it the lazy way :-) .
This tribute album shows once again how strong the voices and vocal arrangements of the Hollies were. Undoubtedly there are really good versions on the album, but there are also songs here which in my opinion don't get the title ''weak'' only because of the exceptionally strong vocal performance of the Hollies. But this is only true for a few songs here.

For me, the production when the album was released in 1980 took some getting used to. The synthesizer sounds on the album are also a minus point. Nevertheless, the band managed to put their own stamp on the songs and create a good pop album. But all in all, the band sounds torn between making a good tribute album on the one hand and making a contemporary pop album for the market on the other. Enjoy (Frank)
